Family First Health Providers Telling Patients “Eat Your Greens!”

IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Family First Health Providers Telling Patients “Eat Your Greens!”

Community health center shares health tips on making fruits and vegetables part of the conversation with your doctor and dentist.

Central PA (March 16, 2013) –Family First Health, a community health center in York and Adams Counties, is encouraging patients to make fruits and veggies part of the discussion with their doctor and dentist. Through a series of events called “Eat Your Greens,” Family First Health is prescribing a healthier lifestyle to patients and non-patients alike.

Studies have shown that cost efficiencies in health care coverage can be attained by proactive health habits, like a well-balanced diet and high intake of fruits and vegetables. A major study by National Institutes of Health showed a 58 percent reduction in new cases of diabetes over five years with just a very modest lifestyle and diet intervention with a 5 percent weight loss.

“Having people take better care of themselves is one of the best ways of reducing the costs of health care coverage,” says Jenny Englerth, CEO of Family First Health. “We want our patients to know that they can be an active partner in their health by talking with their doctor or dentist about their diet.”

The public can visit FamilyFirstHealth.org/greens for more information on the benefits of eating a healthy diet and some myth-busting facts on healthy eating and budget. Follow Family First Health on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/FamilyFirstHealth.

Any contribution, in any amount that is most comfortable for you, makes an impact on the 20,000 community members of York and Adams counties that we provide medical, dental, and social services to throughout the year.

Why is access to medical care important? Well, ask Antron, a third grader who had dental insurance coverage but could not get an appointment to see a dentist. No matter how hard his mom tried, she could not get Antron a dental appointment to take care of his worsening tooth pain. Every office that she called which accepted their insurance plan told her they were not taking new patients.

Because Antron did not have access to dental care, he was often in the school nurse’s office for terrible tooth pain from these untreated dental problems. He was unable to focus in his classes. His dental problems restricted his diet until he could only eat foods that were not too hot or cold. Antron could not function — he was in too much pain.

One of our Family First Health Dentists saw Antron for a dental screening we held at his school. There, the dentist saw right away why Antron was in so much pain — four of his teeth needed to be pulled, four had cavities and there were also several abscesses. Without prompt dental care, Antron could be on the path to developing severe medical complications from these untreated dental problems.

Thanks to the Family First Health dental outreach program, we swiftly transitioned Antron into dental care at our school-based health center, where, with his mother’s permission, he began to receive treatment during school hours. This convenient scheduling removed another barrier to his ability to get care.

Today, because Antron finally has access to the dental care he needs, he is a healthy, happy third grader free from tooth pain. Antron’s little brother is starting dental care with us before he develops any serious dental problems.

Swift access to medical care helps people get the care they need when they need it, and preventative services stop problems before they start. We’re proud to have provided these services.

Please help children like Antron today. With your donation, we can continue to provide high-quality medical, dental and social services to those who need it most.

Family First Health Spotlighted by US Department of Health and Human Services

HRSA Family First Health Spotlight
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration has spotlighted Family First Health’s HIV screening pilot program, which makes (confidential) HIV testing a routine offering at FFH locations.

In 2007, fewer than 200 of Family First Health’s 14,295 medical patients received HIV tests. Today, every patient age 13 or older is offered the opportunity to be screened for HIV – in a non-judgmental way that has proven successful.

Patients at Family First Health are starting to think about HIV testing in the same way they think about cholesterol or diabetes testing. Since 2009, 64 percent of patients offered the HIV test have taken it, with higher acceptance rates of 71 percent among Hispanic/Latino patients and 68 percent among young people.

Read about the pilot program on the Department’s website.

IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Family First Health to Offer Free Screening of “Escape Fire: The Fight To Rescue American Healthcare”

Documentary tackles how we can save our healthcare system.

YORK, PA (October 11, 2012)—Family First Health is proud to announce they will be hosting a free screening of the buzz-worthy documentary, “Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare,” on October 30, 2012 at the Capitol Theatre in York, PA. A reception will begin at 5:00 pm, with the screening beginning at 5:30 pm.

Called the “‘An Inconvenient Truth’ for the healthcare debate,” “Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare” follows dramatic human stories, as well as leaders fighting to transform healthcare at the highest levels of medicine, industry, government and even the United States military. The film argues that we can switch from an unsustainable “disease management system” that relies on expensive drugs and often unnecessary medical procedures to a system that focuses on prevention over cure.

Immediately following the screening, a panel discussion will be held to further discuss healthcare issues in our region and country.

To date, the screening is the only showing of the documentary scheduled in the state of Pennsylvania.
